FARNHAM’S young book lovers are being encouraged to take on a Roald Dahl reading challenge this summer.

To mark 100 years since the birth of the famous storyteller, Surrey’s libraries want children aged four to 11 to read six of his books during the long school holiday.

Last year nearly 17,000 children took part and all they have to do to get involved this time is sign up at one of Surrey’s 53 libraries.

The challenge comes just weeks after the council revealed that children borrowed more than two million fiction books from the county’s libraries in a year – the highest figure for more than a decade.

More information about the challenge – based around the theme of ‘The Big Friendly Read’ – can be found on the council’s website.
