ROD Stewart swapped Las Vegas for Ewhurst on Saturday night, at a landmark reunion gig by the three surviving members of legendary rock band The Faces.
Small Faces founder drummer Kenney Jones achieved what many fans believed to be the impossible when he persuaded former members Rod and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, who joined together in 1970, to reunite after 40 years for a one-off performance in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.
The extraordinary Rock ’N’ Horse Power event at Hurtmore Park Polo Club near Cranleigh, which Kenney owns, was watched by a mere 5,000 fans and they went wild when their heroes took to the stage.
Clearly having a great time themselves rediscovering their old hits, Rod, Ronnie and Kenney treated their audience to a fantastic seven-song set, including I Feel So Good, You Can Make Me Dance, Ooh La La, I’d Rather Go Blind, (I Know) I’m Losing You, Stay With Me and Sweet Little Rock ‘n’ Roller.
“We’ve only had a few hours’ rehearsal so there’s bound to be a few cock-ups,” said an apologetic Rod at the start and setting the tone for a brilliant but deeply laid-back set that included a virtuoso drum solo by Kenney and showed all three are still at the top of their game.
On-stage banter in between songs, included a poignant reminiscence about recording the late Ronnie Lane’s Faces hit, Ooh La La, which includes a rare vocal by Ronnie Wood, at Lane’s Richmond home, with Ronnie asking Rod if he remembered the name of Lane’s cat.
“Now we are three,” Rod said, in another poignant moment, when he took to the stage with Ronnie and Kenney at the end of the show.
The stellar line-up to the main event featured Steve Harley, who got everyone up and dancing with his rousing rendition of Cockney Rebel’s 1970s hit Come up and see me, and Midge Ure, who delighted Ultravox fans by singing Vienna. Whipping the crowd up for the grand finale, was BBC Radio 1’s longest serving DJ Annie Nightingale, who took to the decks for a special performance.
