ROTARIANS from Farnham Weyside Rotary Club have planted 5,000 purple crocus corms in Castle Street, with the help of Farnham Town Council and volunteers from Farnham in Bloom and Surrey Community Development Trust.
As well as an effort to make the town more beautiful, it is also a way of raising awareness of the fight against polio.
The purple crocus is a symbol of the Rotary campaign to eliminate polio from the world. During the last 30 years the number of countries where polio was endemic has dropped from 125 to 2 and over 2.5 billion children have received vaccinations, thanks to Rotary.
Rotary International in Britain has joined together with the Royal Horticultural Society to encourage the planting of more than six million crocuses throughout Britain.
Next spring, everyone coming into Farnham down Castle Street will find the approach brightened by the blooming of these purple crocuses.
