RUBYCLIFF'S parent company has this week defended its actions to shut the plastic injection moulding factory in Bordon.

In a letter to The Herald, managing director of Blugilt Holdings, Eddie Holt, said: "I regret the loss of jobs at Bordon, but companies do need to restructure from time to time in the face of mounting competition."

He added that cheap imports combined with the high price of sterling reduces "our competitiveness and hits many of our customers, thereby reducing our revenue".

Rubycliff is due to shed 34 jobs when it ceases manufacturing in July. The firm is due to vacate the premises on August 24.

The firm has been in Bordon since the 1970s and once employed 90 people.

An anonymous worker at the firm last week described the redundancies as "a total kick in the teeth" and told how many workers had no idea that they were going to lose their jobs.

In the letter to The Herald, Mr Holt also pointed put that a total of 55,000 jobs had been lost in the manufacturing sector in the last financial period.
