A RUNAWAY boat on the A3 northbound near Thursley caused delays and the temporary closure of the Hindhead Tunnel, on Sunday evening.

Surrey Police were called to the scene but no one was injured when the boat slipped its moorings on the trailer it was being towed on, ending up lodged in the embankment just after the Thursley slip road junction just before 6pm.

The northbound tunnel was closed for a short time as a safety precaution to stagger the volume of traffic heading back from the coast, which was reduced to a single carriageway at the scene of the incident.
