A DEXTER calf named Marilyn led police in Farnham a merry dance last Friday, ending up on a housing estate at Hale after swimming the River Wey to escape from a field in Moor Park.

The nine-month-old calf had been bought only the previous day from Staines Moor and while new owners Bob and Ros Milton were frantically searching around Kilnside Farm, wayward Marilyn had much wider ambitions.

First reports to police, at about 8.30am, were that the calf was by the A31 Farnham bypass between the Shepherd and Flock and Hickley's Corner.

From there she must have doubled back, crossing some seriously busy roads in rush hour, to be sighted at Farnham Rugby Club in Monkton Lane.

Soon after, police actually witnessed the calf crossing the A325 into the Upper Hale Road. "She waited until the lights were on red," one traffic officer reported.

After calmly turning into White Cottage Close, she proceeded through the estate and was eventually trapped after entering a garden belonging to Claire Gibbs.
