THE RUSSIAN State Opera is bringing Madama Butterfly to the Princes Hall in Aldershot on March 6 at 7.30pm.
An impressive cast accompanied by an orchestra of more than 30 musicians will perform this tragic opera by Giacomo Puccini, which is sung in Italian with English surtitles.
This tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music.
Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, Madama Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic operas, and from its theme of noble self-sacrifice springs melodies to grip the heart.
The bride’s self-sacrifice and defiance of her family lead to heartbreak and tragedy. This exquisite production, with its beautiful set and costumes, intensifies the emotion.
Producer Alexej Ignatow, of Amande Concerts Ltd, said: “No experience of opera is needed to enjoy this classic.
“Our sets and costume designs, as well as the informative programme, make the production very accessible and, most of all, enjoyable. English surtitles make it easy to follow the story as you listen to the performance sung in its original language.”
Asked how he started his day, Alexej said: “When we are on tour, each day and morning is the same. We wake up, have a quick breakfast at the hotel and get on the road to the next theatre.”
The classics make up the bulk of Alexej’s favourite operas. He said: “I am very conservative and currently enjoy the mainstream titles more. Maybe it is because I heard Puccini’s and Verdi’s masterpieces more often than others, but all these somehow feel more related to me.”
His tour motto? “Keep everything simple!”
