CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save the Royal Surrey County Hospital from possible closure have reported a large increase in support from the public as their campaign gathers momentum. Following the hugely successful rally in Guildford town centre in October, which saw over 7,000 people turn out, the campaign has seen donations flooding in as it continues to raise awareness and protest about the cuts currently being mulled over by the South East Coast Strategic Health Authority. The fighting fund currently stands at just less than £10,000. But campaign organisers have stressed that much more money is needed to take on the health authorities and win. The campaign has the backing of all local political parties, and is chaired by Professor Chris Marks, a leading consultant at the hospital. Professor Marks said: "It's great that the residents of Surrey have responded so positively to our campaign. The donations we have received are fantastic but we need more, much more, if are going to succeed in our battle against closure. "Our campaign needs to be high-profile and vocal, and so we need a substantial fighting fund to raise awareness of the issues and to make our case to those in charge of the funding review. "We need all the help we can get. I strongly encourage people to send in their donations, volunteer some of their time or express their support by writing letters or signing petitions."
