A RECORD number of pancake races were held at Fernhurst Junior School on Tuesday, and a record number of racers took part.

Organiser Judith Turner said: "Girls and boys raced the length of the upper play area, as the lower playing field is currently a building site in preparation for the new classrooms about to be completed.

"Some children brought their own frying pans and some their own edible pancake, but the other runners were all supplied with pans and plastic pancakes.

"Fernhurst's May Queen Grace Marston in one of her last duties in that role, did an excellent job in helping tell the children when to start, where to flip their pancakes and the importance of keeping their pancake on board.

"The teachers rolled out the entrants for each race and an excellent team of boys from year six collected up pans and pancakes at the finish and took them back to the start.

"I would also like to thank the finishing line holders, the judge and everyone else who made my job so easy.

"It was a joy seeing the enthusiasm the children had, both for themselves and for their friends and we enjoyed a wonderful tea with cakes afterwards from the parent teacher association."
