AN appeal for more adult volunteers – as well as stories, pictures and memorabilia – has been issued by 1st Haslemere, one of the oldest scout groups in the country.

On Sunday, 1st Haslemere Scout Group joined other groups in the area for an activities afternoon in Chiddingfold not only to celebrate St George – the patron saint of the movement – but also its 110th anniversary.

In 1907, Robert Baden Powell founded the Scouting movement and 1st Haslemere was established two years later.

During 2019, the group is working hard to ensure it can provide another 110 years of scouting in Haslemere.

This includes retaining Haslemere’s headquarters on the youth campus in Wey Hill.

The site, which has been the group’s home since 1924, has been allocated for housing in Waverley Borough Council’s Local Plan.

Group chair Paul Buckler said: “1st Haslemere currently has more than 80 young people with many more on the waiting list. The group is operating at full capacity and more adult volunteers are needed to allow us to grow and increase the number of children who can benefit.”
