CAMELSDALE Scouts were out in force on Saturday, cleaning up the War Memorial at Shottermill ponds ready for Sunday's Remembrance parade and service.

Spokesman John Stone said: "With reports up and down the country of memorials being vandalised, bronze plaques being stolen, and in some cases statues being cut from their plinths to be sold for scrap, it was very gratifying to see.

"They scrubbed the stonework clean, edged and weeded the paths, and their leaders replaced some of the broken stonework."

The work was supported by the Mabel Grant Trust, which is working to get the area around the memorial and the pond tidied up.

On Remembrance Sunday, there were two well-attended church services for those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and conflicts since, held at St Peter's Church, Lynchmere, and St Paul's Church, Camelsdale. The Reverend David Talks conducted both.
