THE annual Seale and Sands Summer Show is the highlight of the calendar when the villagers and those from further afield come together for a fun-filled afternoon.

This year did not disappoint when hundreds of people turned out to join in with the festivities bathed mostly, in glorious sunshine.

The afternoon kicked off with the always amusing Dog Disorder, dogs leading their unruly owners over obstacles and through tunnels all against the clock to see if it was the canines of Seale or Sands that were top dogs.

The Pilgrim Morris Men of Guildford men took to the arena next treating all to a display of traditional dances with plenty of hankie waving and stick wielding.

The courageous teddy bears of the villagers strapped into their parachutes, took to the 15 metre high platform, stepped off and gently descended gracefully down to the ground.

The village children who acted as veterinary nurses were presented with a well-deserved bravery certificate.

Outside of the arena there were plenty of stalls and games to keep everyone busy, Scalextric racing and the coconut shy had a queue of children all day, and hoopla and lucky dip were as popular as ever.

The marquee was packed with people admiring the entries and exhibits and seeing just who had scooped prizes and awards from the judges.

The flowers and arrangements were “beautiful”, the children had excelled with their artwork and the judges had a tough time deciding the winner in the cakes and bakes competition.

The big event of the afternoon was The Barley Mow Chase - six highly trained sheep were paraded before the gathering crowds. They were soon under starters orders and then they were off, racing over jumps towards the winning post. Number five, ‘Chops’ was first across the line to much applause.

The afternoon ended with the tug of war, Seale and Sands giving it all they had in an epic and hard fought battle, The Sands village was victorious but Seale will be back next year to reclaim the title.

Committee chairman Malcolm Grant-Haworth, said: “What a wonderful afternoon, fantastic family fun and the support we have from everyone is tremendous.

“The atmosphere was great and the committee would like to thank everyone that came along and a special thank you to everyone involved, it’s the army of volunteers that make this event possible. We look forward to seeing you all in 2017.”
