THERE will be rioting again in Selborne and Headley later this year, and local residents are being invited to take part.

The so-called Swing Riots occurred in the villages in 1830, and several men were transported to Australia as a result.

Now local playwright and historian Jo Smith is looking for a cast to recreate the events in October. No previous acting experience is necessary and Mr Smith aims to find a part for anyone who is interested.

Presentation evenings for people wanting to find out more about the project will be held on June 18 at the Scout Hut in Headley and on June 19 at the Queens Hotel, Selborne starting at 8 pm. Anyone interested but unable to attend the presentations should contact Jo Smith on 01428 712892.

A previous production in 1993 resulted in a great renewal of interest in the history of the riots, not only in England, but also among descendants of the rioters across the world.

Further details about the riots can be viewed at http://www.headley1.demon.co.uk/riot/">www.headley1.demon.co.uk/riot/

Rehearsals will start in early August, and performances will be staged in Tilford, Bordon, Selborne, Thursley and Headley between October 6 and 19.
