A NEW Mayor of Haslemere was elected last week as Brian Howard took on the role from Michael Dover for the second time. Mr Howard was previously the town's mayor in 1999, and he is hoping for a similarly successful spell in the role this time. In a speech at the annual town council meeting last week, he said: "Everyone who has held this office understands the potential power of the office, and rightly or wrongly, the title can open doors or achieve results. "Seven years ago we were still talking about the proposed Haslewey. Now it is an established and very important part of the community and a credit to all who made it possible and all who contribute to running it." Mr Howard also revealed the two charities for which he hopes to raise money and awareness over the next year. The mayor will support Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening (GUTS) and Projects Aiding Gambian Education And Natural Talent (Pageant). The new mayor was already out and about in Beacon Hill this week, helping to level and tidy Woodcock Green. Mr Howard was joined by outgoing mayor Michael Dover and town councillor Peter Sherwood. The new mayor said he hoped to continue the good work which has already been carried out in Beacon Hill by his predecessors. Mr Howard is pictured receiving the chains of office from outgoing mayor Michael Dover. (HOD21-703-06)
