FARNHAM Town Council has launched its Secret Gardens Competition as part of its quest to discover the neighbourhood’s hidden courtyards, “fabulous” shop fronts, creative container planting and imaginative front and back gardens.

There are eight entry categories to choose from, which include best courtyard; best hanging basket or container; best front, back or small garden; best large garden; best public house or hotel; schools’ garden award; best shop front; and best wildlife garden.

Stephen Hill, the town council’s lead member for Farnham in Bloom, said: “Anybody can enter the Secret Gardens Competition. The categories cover all levels of gardening and an entry in the best hanging basket or container category will be just as welcome as an entry into the best large garden class.

“The judges will be looking for good quality planting, examples of environmental best practice, good garden management and areas for wildlife.”

All entrants will be invited to the Farnham in Bloom Awards’ ceremony in October. The awards will see the presentation of prizes to the winners of the Secret Gardens Competition.

The overall winner of each category will receive a trophy, certificate and £50 in garden vouchers. Second and third place winners will receive certificates and garden vouchers. The judges will present a special award to the Gardener of the Year.

The closing date for entering is Wednesday, June 22. Judging will take place between June 29 and 30 and July 1. Entry forms are available at www.farnham.gov.uk/bloom, or by calling Lara Prior on 01252 712667.
