FARNHAM Local Food is holding is annual popular fete and plant sale on Sunday, June 5.
The event is at Runfold St George (GU10 1PL), and will be signposted from St George’s Road, Badshot Lea.
This year, as well as a wide selection of plants, there will be live music, tea and cakes, and various family activities. It is also an opportunity to meet members of Farnham Local Food and find out about what they do. The event starts kicks of from 11am and runs right through until 4pm.
Farnham Local Food is a local food-growing enterprise, it started as a small project in one of the member’s garden and now supplies fresh vegetables to more than 60 families every week.
As most of the work is done by volunteers, the group generates a real community spirit - the fete is one of the highlights of the year in the group’s calendar, and is always a lot of fun.
This fete will be the last at the current site, as the group are moving to a new home next year. After an extensive search for a suitable plot of land, the group hopes to be able to finalise a lease on a two-acre field very soon.
Although the new site is close to the old one, moving will be a huge undertaking. The members will not only have to transfer the vegetable growing activities, but also three poly-tunnels, a shelter, a yurt, and two sheds.
As most of the members are unpaid volunteers, this will require a lot of commitment and good-will.
However, the groups members are a game lot, and have overcome many obstacles in the past, in fact the current site was grazing land with poor soil when they originally took it over. All being well, the new site will be fully operational in early 2017.
Farnham Local Food is self-financing, the fete this year will provide vital funds to help pay for the move. To find out more visit the group’s website at www.fanhamfood.com.
