The race will not be providing its usual climax to the village fete on Saturday after Thames Water ignored pleas from Tilford Parish Council to carry out tests in time to allay public health concerns. By the time the all clear was given this week, fete organisers had already taken the decision to substitute a scarecrow competition for the popular raft race.
