ARCHITECT and former councillor Michael Blower has called for the concept of "shared space" to be considered as a solution to Farnham's traffic and air pollution problems.

The urban design concept, being adopted increasingly elsewhere in Europe and throughout the world, aims at the integrated use of public spaces.

Traffic travels at very slow speed, unsegregated from pedestrians and cyclists in what Mr Blower describes as "a more friendly and civilised environment".

The assumption of responsibility lies with the "less vulnerable space user", doing away with the current system in which the motorist rules the roost.
