Haslemere Museum will be hosting a meeting of the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland tomorrow (Saturday).
Not only does the museum have a large and interesting shell collection, but a former curator E.W. Swanton was a member of the society as early as 1895, and also became president of the society.
The morning is devoted to two talks, one on E.W. Swanton as Conchologist by Dr June Chatfield, and one by Curator Julia Tanner on shells in the museum’s collection. There will also be displays and gallery tours.
A “shell roadshow” takes place in the afternoon when members of the public can bring a shell or two along for comment and identification by the experts. It will be followed by a gallery tour on fossil molluscs.
