SHERLOCK Holmes fans gathered for a world record attempt for the most people dressed as the famous fictional detective last weekend, in a bid to raise awareness and funds for the restoration of Undershaw at Hindhead, The publicity stunt also sent Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch a unique birthday message. Altogether 113 people dressed up as the fictional detective complete with cape, magnifying glass, pipe and deerstalker hat, converged on London's University College, for the official Guinness World Record attempt. Big-name supporters donated prizes to a raffle including comedian Stephen Fry, the cast and crew of the BBC production including Mark Gatiss, who is the patron of UPT, and authors Ian Rankin and Anthony Horwitz. The record was broken, although it still has to be ratified by Guinness, and thousands of pounds raised towards the restoration, which will include Sir Arthur's study and the heraldic stained glass window.
