AN East Hampshire community is in mourning following the death of man at a level crossing north of Petersfield.

Rail services between Petersfield and Haslemere were cancelled on Tuesday after a man was struck by a train in Liss Forest.

The victim, said to be Liss man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident at the Forest Road crossing at 3.30pm.

British Transport Police confirmed in a statement that medics from South Central Ambulance service were unable to save the man. They are not treating the incident as suspicious and have denied rumours that a barrier fault played a part in the tragedy.
