THE closure of Currys Electrical Shop in Petersfield has been greeted with dismay by people in Petersfield. Residents say they must now travel more than 10 miles to Portsmouth to buy kitchen appliances and other large electrical equipment. Standing outside the shop which closed last week, one Petersfield shopper told The Herald: "Currys in Petersfield have taken our money when the times were good, but they are a large manufacturer covering the whole country and if one store does a good trade while another doesn't do quite so well, they should continue as a service to the town." "They are making the excuse that their rates are too high in Petersfield, but they were our only electrical shop of any note and now we have to travel to Portsmouth. Their attitude is 'We don't care, you will now have to travel to reach us'." A spokesman for Currys told The Herald: "The store closed because we wanted to renew our lease on a yearly basis and unfortunately the landlord would not agree." She said most members of staff had been redeployed to other Currys stores. They also had the chance to move across to sister companies The Link, PC World and Dixons.
