HASLEMERE residents took to the streets on Saturday to protest about on-street car parking charges being proposed by Surrey County Council.

Nicky Barton got together with the town's chamber of trade president Julianne Evans to organise the protest.

And children from St Bartholomew's School made placards as more than 100 people gathered in West Street and shoppers joined in as the group marched to the High Street.

Mrs Barton said: "The strength of public outrage at the proposals, the lack of any consultation and the implications of the proposal for the town was tangible on Saturday."
