A STEAM train, bluebells, and a pond are among symbols featured on Four Marks’ new sign which was erected on the village green on October 25 and is a first for the parish.
“A village sign had been talked about for several years as we have never had one,” said festival committee chairman Charles Kidd. “It was on the to do list but never materialised.”
The festival committee looked into the possibility of having a village sign and made the decision to get one after receiving generous grants from the parish and district councils.
“We also got money from the Alton Beer Festival and so reached our £3,000 target,” said Mr Kidd.
“We commissioned artist Rachel Hudson to create a design that was symbolic of Four Marks. As a result, her design includes a steam train, bluebells, the brewery, and a signpost pointing to local roads.
“We had it made by Ashleigh Signs in Yorkshire but we didn’t have a ceremony, just erected it on the green. We chose the green rather than by the main road because of the busy traffic and it might be a distraction to drivers.
“Some people on social media have complained the sign is in the wrong place and should be near the shops but everyone seems to like the design.”
“We would now like to put up smaller signs at the entrance and exit to the village,” he added.
On December 13, the festival committee will hold its carol service at Lymington Barns, stating at 6pm. It will feature a hog roast donated by butcher Norman Read when half of the money raised will go to Mr Read’s charity, Riding for the Disabled, and the other to committee funds.
