A BID for a dynamic new slogan, aimed at "putting Alton on the map" has already attracted some colourful suggestions.

Convinced that 'Alton has Time for You' is now rather "old hat", members of Alton's Promotion and Marketing Forum have thrown a number of ideas into the melting pot, the most controversial from Peter Cansfield, the author of a recently published book on the murder of Sweet Fanny Adams who suggested 'Alton - the Home of Sweet FA.'

He was among those who were keen to highlight the historical connections in and around Alton, among them the Pilgrims Way, Jane Austen and Gilbert White.

Others wanted to highlight the 'market' aspect of the town, while acting town clerk, Greg Burt, suggested selling the town as 'A Gateway to the South Downs National Park'.

While not yet finalised, Mr Burt suggested that Alton should not be afraid to use the proposed national park to its advantage.

Of course, he agreed, there would be large numbers of towns and villages who could use a similar slogan, but that was why it was important to get in first.

"Alton is well placed for touring and exploring the countryside within the proposed park area and the attractions around it," he pointed out.

Commercial property agent, Chris Glanfield suggested involving the local schools by inviting pupils to come up with a suitable marketing slogan for Alton.

Seeking to impress the importance of a good slogan, Mr Burt later warned that, coming from Bognor Regis, he knew that if a town became associated with "a comedy music hall image" it was very difficult to shake.

The slogan, he advised, needed to be short and give the impression that while surrounded by attractive countryside Alton was an exciting place to be - whether to shop, eat out or conduct a business.
