HERRIARD and Winslade Summer Fete and Dog Show

attracted a steady flow of visitors to the recreation ground

on recently, for an old fashioned English country village

fete, blessed this year by dry but cool weather and a great

deal of fun and good will.

Raising money for St Mary’s Church, Herriard, visitors

to the fete were able to enjoy old favourites such tombola,

bottle stall, bric-a-brac, stalls selling plants, books and

clothes, a beer and Pimm’s tent, and barbecue, as well as lots of activities like archery, wellie throwing, children’s rides, willow headdress weaving, plate smashing, a “ginormous” raffle and painting and artistic competitions.

According to Herriard Parish Council chairman Michael

Branigan the village had previously held its annual open

gardens and best kept garden competition and these results

were highly anticipated and announced at the fete: “One

gardener, Gillian Hill, won five prizes for her efforts, probably with some muscular help from her husband!”

The dog show was well attended with over 40 dogs and

owners registered to enter the eight classes, ranging from

Most Handsome Dog and Prettiest Bitch, to the Most

Waggy Tail.

The Best in Show was picked from all those dogs who

received a first place, with this year’s award going to the

Irish Brace, won by a gorgeous wolfhound and his friend,

a small Jack Russell!

In addition, there were three dog challenge classes including temptation alley, where you had to recall your dog

through two rows of toys and temping treats. The organisers said a “special thank-you” to Show Judge, Charlotte Harmer, who had the hard job of choosing from so many lovely dogs.

Thanks go also the “team of helpers” who ensured that

everything ran smoothly for the event.
