Wilf Douglas, a 10-year-old pupil of St Polycarp’s School, arranged for both teams to wear poppies after learning that his great-great-great-uncles Louis and Reuben Neuth were killed during the war.
Louis died in March 1918 on his 21st birthday while Reuben was fatally wounded aged 19 at 10am on November 11, 1918, just one hour before the armistice was signed to end hostilities.
Wilf’s great grandfather Robert, brother of Louis and Reuben, also fought in northern France during the war and survived.
