LIFE-SIZE silhouettes of First World War soldiers have appeared at a number of locations in Farnham as part of the centenary commemorations of the end of the Great War.

The Royal British Legion’s Silent Soldier campaign is supported by Farnham Town Council as a mark of respect for those soldiers who never made it home. Soldiers have been sited at war memorials in Badshot Lea, Hale and Gostrey Meadow (pictured).

St James’s Church in Rowledge is also supporting the ‘There But Not There’ campaign with the installation of a Tommy figure, as are numerous other villages in the area.

A project in Elstead, as previously reported by the Herald, has profiled the 38 villagers who lost their lives in the war.

Carole Cockburn, lead member for cemeteries at Farnham Town Council, said: “The silent soldiers aim to represent the many soldiers who left Farnham to fight for their country but did not return.

“The soldiers have been placed at the heart of the communities they left behind and are a reminder to us all of what led to the deaths of 888,246 British and Commonwealth service personnel.”

The silent soldiers will remain on display until after Remembrance Sunday.
