LOCAL councillors who attended Tuesday's north east area community committee were unhappy with the response from the highways department about lowering speed limits in the town. A presentation was made to the committee by two members of Hampshire County Council's highway maintenance about its role within the county. Councillor Adam Carew said: "It is a 60 mph speed limit on the Walldown, Liphook and Hollywater roads and we often get people driving down them a lot faster than 60 mph which is totally unacceptable. "It makes no sense to me that these speed limits are not reduced to 40 mph, especially as the B3004 Liphook to Headley Road, which is much bigger, has a limit of 50 mph." Graham Carter of the county council's traffic management team, believed that for some roads, such as the ones around Bordon and Whitehill, it would be inappropriate to reduce the speed limits because people would not abide by them. He said: "If there were many unrealistic speed limits implemented, there is a chance that other sensible limits would be brought into disrepute by some drivers. "People drive according to road conditions, and we would like to see people drive more slowly and sensibly, but, unfortunately, it cannot be enforced. "Education of the driver is the main issue here and just changing numbers will not bring about a reduction in speed." But Mr Carew was dissatisfied with the response, believing that the argument against lowering the speed limits just does not stand up. "Given that we are still waiting on a result for the speed trial on Hollywater Road, the argument that reducing the speed limit just doesn't wash with me. Drivers observing the speed limit encourage others to do so, too," said Mr Carew. The town council had entered into a parish partnership" with HCC to reduce the speed on Hollywater Road but no real progress has between made so far, much to the frustration of the council.
