WELCOMING home their Invictus Games hero, Hindhead Royal British Legion Club laid on a special celebration for courageous Beacon Hill athlete Kirk Hughes and his family.
Kirk from Eight Acres, known as ‘Spike’ to his friends and fellow athletes, returned from the Invictus Games held in Toronto, Canada, with two bronze medals in basketball and tennis and was in the top ten for the hand cycle event.
He also had the honour of being selected as GB team flag bearer and was presented to Prince Harry, who founded the multi-sports event for wounded veterans.
Club vice-chairman Geoff Whitby said: “Spike overcame adversity to start training.
“Hindhead British Legion celebrated with a question-and-answer event where he talked about how he was chosen to carry the team flag at the opening ceremony and his meeting with Prince Harry.
“He also thanked the British Legion, which had helped with transport for his family, who were there to cheer him on, and for the use of the tennis court at the Legion club as part of his preparation for the games.”
