Liphook & Ripsley, denied any action for two weeks, came within four runs of victory in their first timed game of the season.

Bournemouth totalled 218-4 off 64 overs and Liphook closed on 215-8, having received two overs less.

The visitors elected to bat and Matt Swarbrick was again in fine form, making a fine 52 and putting on 71 for the first wicket with Tom Webley.

Dan Jackson kept up the momentum with 53 not out and Julian Cassell joined him in a fourth-wicket stand of 60. Alex Allum contributed 32 not out, but Bournemouth will have been slightly disappointed with their final total.

All the Liphook bowlers performed well, with a wicket apiece for Chris Wright, Glen Read – a recent recruit from Horsham – Matt Eaton and Tim Wheatley.

The Liphook innings started badly when Steve Riley was adjudged to have edged to the wicketkeeper with the score on 5.

But the rest of the batting came good, with everyone making useful contributions. South African Alastair Gray was again the mainstay, making a very patient 57.

After hasty calculations as to the total required for a winning draw, Liphook eventually reached it in the penultimate over, but continued to push hard for the outright win, falling just four runs short.

Liphook remain bottom, but this performance will give the team renewed hope for the rest of the season.
