The Haslemere team included Paul Spooner, brother of Park Wall's Bruce Spooner. It is believed that this was the first Handicap final in which brothers were on opposing sides.
Daniel Edwards opened strongly for Haslemere, opening up a 7-1 lead before Bruce Spooner settled to win 21-14, 21-15. The controlled hitting approach of Haslemere against the higher-ranked Park Wall side saw Peter Richardson take sets off Vic Beesley and Bruce Spooner. But the star of the show was 16-year-old Edwards who, having lost his first set against Alan Thompson 7-21, came back to win the second 21-16, leaving Park Wall some distance behind.
Bruce Spooner beat brother Paul 21-8, 21-9, but in the final set of the match, Edwards defeated Beesley 21-19 to give Haslemere victory by 541/2 points.
Earlier, in their semi-final, Park Wall began well against Bordon 'A' when Bruce Spooner, against the form book, beat Jean Manning 21-9, 21-14.
Worse was to follow for Bordon as Beesley took the first set off Malcolm Ironmonger 21-12. These three sets proved the undoing of Bordon and by the end of the fifth game, they were 48 points adrift.
Then came a fightback as Ironmonger beat Eric Doughty 21-12, 21-12 and Steve King held Beesley 24-22, 17-21. Despite the late efforts of Manning and Ironmonger, Bordon finished 191/2 points behind.
In the league, there was only one outstanding issue, the runners-up position in the second division. Brook 'D' needed to win or at least draw against Alice Holt to go above Haslemere 'E'.
Alice Holt soon took a 4-0 lead, but then John Winder defeated Peter Norman 21-11, 21-12 and Norman Warner beat Ricki Butt 12-21, 21-13, 22-20. Torkal Butt completed his hat-trick for the Foresters and this meant that Brook had to win the final three games.
Lee Bonner beat Ricki Butt 25-24 in the second set and then Brook took the the final two games, both in three, to give them the draw. This gave them second spot above Haslemere because they had won one more match. They also took away the Foresters' 100 per cent record.
The league AGM will be held on Tuesday, July 2 at the Noah's Ark in Lurgashall (7-30 pm).
