FOOTBALL - Aldershot Town went out of the FA Cup, beaten 2-0 by Exeter City, but it was events off the field that made the headlines. Serious crowd congestion caused the game to be stopped for 32 minutes while stewards and police moved Aldershot supporters into other areas. Aldershot blamed Exeter for bad organisation and putting the safety of fans at risk.

When play resumed, Exeter booked their place in the third round with first-half goals by Gary Alexander and Steve Flack.

Farnham Town beat Reading 3-1 on Tuesday night to register their third successive victory in the Courage Combined Counties League. Craig Moore, Howard Bristow and Dave Bridger scored the goals that wrapped up the game before half-time.

Alton Town and Liss Athletic both lost in the Hampshire Premier League. Alton, currently without a manager, lost 2-1 at West Wight and Liss went down by the same score at Brading Town.

Local rivals Badshot Lea and Wrecclesham clashed in the Surrey Intermediate League. Steve Budd put 'Lea in front, but Wrecclesham came back fighting and a brace of goals from Danny Coldicott earned them three precious points.

RUGBY - Alton, Farnham and Haslemere all recorded excellent wins in the English Clubs Championship. Alton (London II South) moved into the top five with their 20-13 home victory against Sevenoaks. Farnham cruised home 27-5 against Old Walcountians in Surrey Div. I and Haslemere came from behind to overpower Law Society 32-22 in Surrey Div. II.

ATHLETICS - Chris Thompson, AFD's star cross-country runner, booked his place in next month's European junior cross-country championships with a superb victory at Margate. The 18-year-old was running near the back of the field after the first lap, but then stormed through to win by 10 seconds.

SWIMMING - Alton Swimming Club won promotion to the Speedo League first division with a victory at Orpington. John McHarg was the outstanding swimmer with two individual wins. Rushmoor Synchronised Swimming Club, with a number of Farnham girls in their squad, gave gold medal winning performances at the National Age Group Championships.
