FOOTBALL - Feelings ran high at Aldershot Town as fans responded to the wind-up tactics of Dulwich Hamlet's Peter Garland. The bad-tempered encounter included an incident in which Garland is alleged to have spat at Shots skipper Colin Fielder - about which manager George Borg intends to lodge an official complaint to the league.
But, despite losing their way for part of the game, the Shots replied in the best possible fashion, by beating the Ryman Premier Division's third-placed side by 3-2 - recent signing Grant Payne hitting the winner.
After both clubs had their Saturday games called off through bad weather, Farnham Town and Alton Town, both losing semi-finalists last year, went out of the Aldershot Senior Cup. Farnham at least took Fleet Town to extra time on a freezing cold Tuesday night.
Liss Athletic recorded a notable Hampshire Premier League victory away at Blackfield. Local Farnham rivals Hale and Tongham met for the first time in six years - Tongham were 2-0 winners in the Surrey Inter. League challenge club fixture.
RUGBY - Alton recorded a 19-3 win against Warlingham to keep them in sixth place in London Division Two (South). Veteran John Fairley turned out (and scored) for Alton's seconds team - both firsts and seconds beat Merton with high scores. Haslemere, however, found themselves in need of a Christmas break.
HOCKEY - Haslemere at last fulfilled their promise and notched up a huge score - 10-0 at home to London University in the Hants/Surrey division of the South Hockey League. Petersfield enjoyed a good win at Southsea in Hants Divison One, while Aldershot and Farnham ladies were successful at Trojans.
SWIMMING - Alton confirmed their promotion to Speedo League Division I, although only coming home fourth at Crawley. Haslemere, with whom Alton will now compete on a par, secured their continuation in Division I, improving their ranking to ninth with a good performance at Oxford.
CROSS-COUNTRY - Haslemere Border AC hosted a Sweatshop Surrey League meeting at the Devil's Punch Bowl, Farnham Runners men were awarded second team prize in the Hog's Back Race, while Liss Runners were well represented at Tweseldown. AFD were the fourth placed team in the Surrey league meeting at Wimbledon.
CRICKET - Alan Thorpe was elected to lead Farnham CC again at the club's AGM, with Gary Clapham as vice-captain. At Haslemere CC's AGM Kym Hooker stepped down after four years at the helm, handing over to Kevin Gray.
