FOOTBALL - Aldershot Town have lost ground in the Ryman League title race after two successive defeats. Following their dismal display against Heybridge on Saturday, Aldershot raised their game for the local derby at Basingstoke on Tuesday, but a close contest went in the home team's favour when Tim Sills converted a penalty to clinch a 2-1 victory.
Aldershot manager George Borg caused a stir by fining his team a week's wages for "not working hard enough" in the Heybridge match.
Farnham Town's good run in the Courage Combined Counties League came to an end when they lost by a single goal at Godalming. It was a day Farnham will want to forget. Substitute Jason Frommholz broke a leg in a collision with the goalkeeper and Godalming's winner was scored by Richard Davies, a former Farnham player.
The Hampshire Premier League also featured a local derby and Alton Town finished a demoralised side after letting a three-goal lead slip away. Petersfield eventually won 4-3, their dramatic recovery being completed by Darren Chant's second goal.
Chiddingfold beat Lightwater 2-1, after extra time, in the Surrey Intermediate Cup, while Badshot Lea demolished FCA 8-1 in the same competition.
RUGBY - Local clubs had an excellent day as the second half of the league season got underway. Alton beat Beckenham 10-0 in London 2 (South) and in-form Farnham, although not at their best, were convincing 28-13 winners against Streatham in Surrey Div. I. Haslemere put three league defeats behind them with a heartening 28-14 victory over London Media in Surrey Div. II.
HOCKEY - Haslemere, who had won their previous league fixture 10-0, came up against gritty opponents in Wanderers at the start of the second half of the Hants/Surrey Regional season. After missing some late chances, Haslemere had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
SWIMMING - Haslemere Swimming Club's junior members performed well in the first competitive gala of the new century. Haslemere finished close runners-up to Woking in the Gibson Shield after a monumental battle with the host club.
CROSS-COUNTRY - Aldershot, Farnham & District AC had a superb day in the Hampshire cross-country championships at Havant. The U/13 girls were particularly impressive, filling the top five places in their race.
TABLE TENNIS – Central 'A' are well on course to retaining their title in the Aldershot & District League. The Farnham side have a 100 per cent winning record and also have three matches in hand.
