FOOTBALL - The dismissal of Jimmy Sugrue ruined Aldershot's chances of reaching the last 16 of the FA Umbro Trophy. Although they were trailing Woking by a single goal on Tuesday night, Aldershot were putting the visitors under heavy pressure. However, Sugrue's red card after an assault on Dante Alighieri reduced Aldershot to 10 men for the last 14 minutes and the Conference side, who had taken the lead with a Darran Hay goal, easily played out time to earn a trip to Southport in the next round.

Farnham Town's season has been disrupted by several serious injuries and the latest casualty was Richard Hack who suffered a double fracture of his leg after an innocuous challenge. Farnham were within seconds of winning the Courage Combined Counties League match at Merstham after goals by Lee Heron and Dave Bridger, but a defensive mix-up gifted the home side a point.

Alton Town, struggling in the Hants Premier League, recorded a morale-boosting win at Romsey. Town romped home 4-1 with goals from Mickey Street, Gareth Billington, Glen Murphy and Paul Ventham.

Liss Athletic, meanwhile, notched up their third win in a row. Substitutes Chris Ellard and Brian Wood grabbed the goals as Liss defeated Hayling United 2-1.

Shottermill blew their chance of three valuable points in the Surrey Premier League. Two goals from substitute Stuart Gadsby seemed to have put the result beyond doubt, but 10-man Crescent Rovers stormed back to score twice in the last 15 minutes.

Hale consolidated second place in the Surrey Intermediate Premier Div. III, but were pushed all the way by Knaphill. Hale eventually won 4-3, their goals coming from Sam Brown, Dom Orchard, Andy Tester and Paul Saunders.

RUGBY - Three local town clubs recorded good league wins. Alton relied on the power of their forwards in a dour 17-11 victory at Lewes in the London League II (South). Farnham had to contend with appalling conditions underfoot in their Surrey Div. I match, but beat Woking 13-6 to make it eight league wins on the trot.

Haslemere took a heavy surface in their stride and continued their assault on the Surrey Div. II title with a 30-0 win against Teddington. Wing Ollie Landers scored two excellent tries.

Alton Ladies were not quite at their best against Crawley, but still powered to a 34-0 victory to strengthen their position at the top of the RFUW Premier League II.

HOCKEY - Haslemere had lost 5-6 to Spencer earlier in the season and the sides produced another entertaining match, with honours finishing even. Haslemere had to dig deep to overturn a 3-0 deficit, but goals from Mark Cranwell, Tom Norman and Will Davenport earned the Blues a fighting draw in the Hants/Surrey Regional match.

Petersfield took their winning run to seven games and their 2-1 victory at Southampton consolidated third position in Hants Div. I.

Aldershot & Farnham and Gregarians both recorded emphatic wins in the Hants Women's League. Fiona Payne scored the best goal of the game as A&F (Div. I) beat City of Portsmouth 3-0, while Gregarians (Div. II) saw off local rivals Petersfield 3-1, with Katrina Leather on target twice.

ATHLETICS - Blackheath Harriers member Giles Clifford won the senior race at the Neil Bellis Cup cross-country meeting, staged by Waverley Harriers at Tilford.
