FOOTBALL - Aldershot Town, the holders, took a big step towards reaching another Hampshire Senior Cup final when they beat Basingstoke 2-0 in the semi-final, first leg on Tuesday. Goals from Wayne Andrews and Gary Abbott - his 30th of the season - finally broke Basingstoke's stubborn resistance in the last two minutes. The second leg will be at The Camrose on March 28 and the final will be played at The Dell.
Farnham Town slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Bedfont in the Courage Combined Counties League, but Badshot Lea returned to form with a 6-2 thumping of Horsley in the Surrey Intermediate Premier Div. I. Hammer beat Windlesham 4-2 in Premier Div. II, while Haslemere could only draw 1-1 with Worplesdon.
Surrey Premier League side Shottermill went down 4-2 to leaders Frimley Green, but managed to reach the final of the Haslemere Hospital Cup by beating Chiddingfold 2-1.
Liss Athletic drew 1-1 with Romsey Town in the Hants Premier League. Alton also drew one apiece with Esso, but should have beaten the visitors who had their goalkeeper sent off in the first half. In midweek, Alton were beaten 4-1 by high-flying Locksheath.
RUGBY - It was Vice Presidents' Day at Woolmer Hill and Haslemere gave a sparkling performance to beat Chipstead 29-3. Andy Oxley scored two fine breakaway tries and this result gives Haslemere a great chance of promotion to Surrey Div. I.
Alton lost 24-38 to Old Blues in London 2 (South) and must get their act together before their Hampshire Cup final against Basingstoke on April 1.
Alton Ladies, meanwhile, are celebrating their promotion to the top grade of women's rugby. They left the field to a standing ovation after beating Richmond II 24-0, a result that confirms their place in the RFUW Premier Div. I next season.
HOCKEY - Haslemere drew 2-2 with Trojans and have won their battle to remain in the Regional League with one match still to play.
Petersfield took the bare 11 players to Basingstoke and were overwhelmed 6-1 by the Hants Div. I leaders.
SWIMMING – Haslemere Swimming Club have had an excellent Surrey County Championships, with a final tally of 59 medals. Their golden girl was Chloe Winter who powered her way to no less than 10 gold medals.
