FOOTBALL – Aldershot consolidated second place in the Ryman Premier League with a 3-1 win over close rivals Canvey Island in mid-week. Top marksman Gary Abbott scored twice, taking his season's tally to 38, and Aldershot have now won seven league games in a row.

Farnham Town ended their dismal run in the Courage Combined Counties League with a fighting 1-1 draw at Chessington United. Paul Warner drove home the equaliser 10 minutes into the second half.

Liss Athletic, having gone 11 matches unbeaten in the Hampshire Premier League, lost 1-0 at home to Ringwood. Struggling Alton Town picked up three valuable points with their 2-0 victory at Colden Common.

Shottermill won by a single goal at Bookham and continue to pull away from the relegation zone in the Surrey Premier League. Anthony Clark scored the goal that clinched 'Mill's third successive win.

Hale beat Burymead 5-1 to confirm themselves as champions of the Surrey Intermediate League Premier Div. III.

RUGBY – Alton lost to Canterbury by 23 points to 27 after giving the London 2 (South) leaders a real fright. Malcolm Osborne scored a late try and Alton had the home side under heavy pressure at the final whistle. Alton finish sixth in the league – their highest ever position.

ATHLETICS – Girls and boys' teams from Aldershot, Farnham & District AC both won gold at the McDonald's Young Athletes' road relays.

HOCKEY - Petersfield missed out on a place in the Hampshire Trophy Final after losing 2-3 to Hamble Old Boys in a thrilling semi-final.

GOLF - Many of the top amateur golfers in the country contest the Selborne Salver tournament at Blackmoor Golf Club this Saturday.

MOTOR RACING - Alton racing driver James Kaye took a well-deserved class win in the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch.
