JUNIOR SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
Winner - Chloe Winter, 15
Chloe has notched up numerous achievements in swimming. A pupil of Churcher's College, Petersfield, Chloe totals some 15 hours a week at the Herons swimming pool, in a punishing training regime, swimming distances of up to 50 kilometres, as well as keeping up with her GCSE studies at school. At weekends she trains at the Aldershot 50-metre pool. Her dedication and results have earned he a place on the World Class Squad at Loughborough.
Commendation - Alastair Gloak, 11.
Alastair is a pupil at Haslemere Preparatory School and was nominated as Surrey Player of the Year in cricket in the under 10 age group. Coached by Alex Stewards's brother as well as being the team's highest run scorer, he is an excellent bowler and is also captain of the Surrey side. In club and school cricket Alastair often plays in sides two years about his age range.
DISABLED SPORTS
PERSONALITY AWARD
Winner - Sarah Timms, 12
Sarah is medal winning swimmer who has recently returned from the national disabled swimming championships in Sheffield with four gold medals for freestyle, backstroke and a team relay; silver for backstroke and a bronze for another team relay.
She has also gained a national time for freestyle and personal best time in other events.
Born with a form form of cerebral palsy which affects her right side Sarah has overcome her disability to take part in fiercely competitive swimming events, training hard and with a determination to succeed.
A pupil at Wispers School, Haslemere, Sarah comes from East Tisted, near Alton.
SPORTS TEAM OF THE YEAR
Winner - Haslemere Hockey Club First Eleven
In 2002, the club won the EHA Vase, a national competition with almost every match played away from home, the victors winning the final at Milton Keynes by 3 goals to one.
Commendation: Haslemere Swimming Club Speedo squad.
Speedo is a national league divided into six regions and the club was promoted to the top premier division this year after beating teams from Southampton, Bracknell, Wokingham, Newbury and Reading. The squad is make up of 32 swimmers from nine to 23 years years of age.
JUNIOR SPORTS TEAM OF THE YEAR
Winner - Haslemere Town Youth Football Club Under 11 Squad
The squad has been so successful in the Surrey Primary League
that several players are now on the books of Portsmouth Football Club. The club recently won the prestigious six-aside tournament at Petersfield and attribute their success to the players' dedication to training and that many of them have played together for several years.
Commendation - Woolmer Hill Under 15 Cricket Team
Captained by Hampshire Country cricket coach representative Harvey Nash, a pupil at Woolmer Hill, the club is already showing a high level of competiveness since it first competed three years ago. Runners-up in the South Surrey Schools Cricket Cup in their first years, they went on to win the cup the following year. Last year they topped that by retaining their title for a second year.
Commendation - Haslemere Swimming Club - Junior Swim Team
A team of 22 swimmers between the ages of nine and 13 years of age, the junior team competes mostly in the Hants and south coast "premier" and "junior cup" competitions.
Having finished in sixth and fifth place respectively in 2001 the team swam its socks off to finish in third place in both competitions this year.
SPORTS CLUB OF THE YEAR
Winner - Haslemere Swimming Club The club, now in its 31st year has some 400 members and despite its small catchment area compared to other Surrey towns, ranks among the top clubs in the county. It gives members the opportunity to learn to swim and progress through various badge schemes laid down by the Amateur Swimming Association ASA.
In competitive swimming the club excels in all the leagues in which it competes, the most prestigious of which is the Speedo League where the club has won promotion to the premier division within the southern section.
Relying on its invaluable voluntary helpers who are all qualified teachers, the club manages to fund a chief coach and an administrator and pay for teaching courses and examinations for instructors.
The club boasts five swimmers who qualified for the national championships at Sheffield, together with two in theWorld Class Potential Swimming Squad.
SPORTS COACH OF THE YEAR
Winner - Adam Baker
Adam has been chief coach of Haslemere Swimming Club since January 2000. A competitive swimmer himself, this year he took five swimmers to the nationals coming home with five gold medals and four silver. His devotion to the sport has been recognised nationally and he is one of only eight coaches in the UK to be invited by the Amateur Swimming Association ASA as a coach of the World Class Potential Squad, which includes two Haslemere Swimming Club swimmers Owen Morgan and Chloe Winter.
Commendation: Dhiran Patel.
The enthusiastic coach for the Gregarians Hockey Club for a number of years, Dhiran was nominated for his enthusiasm, encouragement to players and knowledge of the game.
SPECIAL SERVICES TO SPORT
Winner - John "Ruben" Burt
Nobody can remember when Ruben joined Shottermill Football Club since he has been there longer than anyone else, first as a player, then as trainer, onto first team manager, committee member and assistant treasurer.
He is always on hand to carry out all the pre match tasks including roping off the area, pegging the nets and setting the corner flags as well after the post-match jobs.
An ardent supporter of the club even after his playing days, he is still giving back to the club the enjoyment he had as a player. Without his unstinting support the club would be unable to continue.
Commendation - Thelma Travis
Thelma became involved with Haslemere Swimming Club 13 years ago when her son joined the club. Since then Thelma took on the role of committee members, representing the club on the Waverley League. She became club championship secretary, team manager, and competition secretary arranging all the league and open galas.
An integral part of the the success of its prestigious galas, Thelma vets entries, is responsible for the programmes with its thousands of names and records the results for the Amateur Swimming Association ASA.
Commendation - Isobel O'Neill
Izzie has had many roles within the Gregarians Ladies Hockey Club from youth development officer and fixtures secretary between 1996 and 2001, and for the past two years has been club captain. She has also been umpire secretary arranging for qualified umpires for various matches.
She is also one of the main coaches and organisers on the mini and junior training sessions for boys and girls every Sunday morning for the past eight years taking them to matches and tournaments.
Still an active first eleven team player, Izzie never misses a training night.
Taking on all her club responsibilities with a huge smile and sense of fun, Izzie is a role model for the club.
