FOOTBALL - Aldershot Town, thanks to a brilliant individual performance by winger Ian Hathaway, beat Staines Town 4-1 to reach the fourth round of the FA Trophy. Aldershot are rewarded with a plumb draw in the last 32. They travel to local rivals Woking, of the Football Conference, on Saturday, February 5, when there is expected to be a sell-out crowd at Kingfield.
Recent signing Steve Stairs scored Farnham Town's winner at Feltham on Saturday, but they slipped up badly in midweek, losing 3-0 at Cove in the Courage Combined Counties League.
It was Alton Town's turn for a fighting comeback in the Hampshire Premier League and they overturned a two-goal deficit to beat New Street 3-2. Mick Street clinched victory with his second goal of the match. Liss Athletic led Pirelli General 2-1 at one stage with goals by Russell Smith and Brian Wood, but the home side came back strongly to win by the odd goal in five.
Shottermill recorded a much-needed home victory in the Surrey Premier League, beating Crescent Rovers 4-2 with a brace of goals from Anthony Hibberd.
Hammer United and Badshot Lea both won convincingly in their Surrey Intermediate Challenge Cup matches, while Wrecclesham were 3-1 winners against Chiddingfold in the Premier Division One.
RUGBY - Farnham and Haslemere both consolidated their positions in the English Clubs Championship. Farnham were in sparkling form and piled up 62 points without reply against Old Caterhamians in Surrey I. Haslemere, after a poor first half, hit top form in the second period and two tries from Andy Oxley saw them to a 22-13 win over Battersea Ironsides in Surrey II.
Alton, however, suffered their heaviest defeat of the season in the high-grade London 2 (South). For once, their pack was regularly shoved off the ball as Effingham powered to a 25-10 victory.
Haslemere are to launch a new young ladies' rugby club at Woolmer Hill on January 25.
HOCKEY - It was sweet revenge for Haslemere in the Hants/Surrey Regional League as they wiped out memories of a 4-1 home defeat with a 6-0 trouncing of Andover. Three goals came in the last 10 minutes, with player-coach Derek Cunliffe scoring twice.
Petersfield were also in ruthless mood and hit double figures in their Hants Div. I match against United Services. Dean Tutt scored a hat-trick in the 10-0 victory.
SWIMMING - Alton Swimming Club urgently need a new coach if they are to keep their diving section going.
ATHLETICS - Vince Garner beat clubmate Dan Getliffe in the finishing straight as Aldershot, Farnham & District's cross-country runners enjoyed another excellent day in the Hampshire League.
