FARNHAM claimed the title in this year's Inter-Town sports competition.

The athletes totted up 195 points, seven ahead of their nearest rivals Haslemere, who won the tournament last year. Godalming finished third and Cranleigh fourth.

Sponsored by General Nutrition Centres, the event attracted more than 900 participants from across the borough.

The competition was split into two separate categories for seniors and juniors.

Haslemere Swimming Club swept the board in the junior swimming gala contributing to the town's overall win of the junior category.

Haslemere also went on to win the dance aerobics competition, which was judged by Diane Youdale, best known for her role as Jet in the TV series Gladiator.

Some 31 different sporting events took place at various locations in and around Farnham including; Farnham Sports Centre, the Army Sports Centre, Brightwells Tennis Club, Brightwells Bowls Club, Farnham Park, Heath End School, Badshot Lea Pond, Farnham Rugby Club, The Memorial Hall, Elstead Riding Club and Frensham Pond Sailing Club.

This year's competition included three disabled sports events; angling, which, was won by Farnham, Boccia, won by Haslemere and sailing at Frensham Pond, won by Cranleigh.

Two of the largest events to take place this year included the swimming gala and the show jumping. Elstead Riding Club hosted the show jumping event, which was won by the Cranleigh team.

One of Cranleigh's outstanding achievers of the day, who received a special achievement certificate for his efforts, was 10-year-old Christopher Milton, who completed three clear rounds in the show jumping event. Special celebrity guest, Kate Allenby, winner of the bronze medal for the modern pentathlon at the Sydney Olympics, presented special achievement certificates to some of the competitors.

Participants awarded special achievement certificates include: Matthew Hurley, (Godalming) and Ashleigh Mackay (Cranleigh) for Boccia; John Baker (Cranleigh) and Henry Williams (Godalming) for basketball; Carrie Humphries (Cranleigh) and Terry Osbourne (Farnham) for table tennis; Shane Barber (Cranleigh) for an excellent performance in the gym tests.

The Mayor of Waverley, Brian Ellis, presented the trophies to each town mayor and congratulated all the participants and the organisers for an excellent day of sport.

He said: "This is a great event and from what I have seen here today everyone has had a wonderful time."
