ST ANDREW’S Church choir has continued its long association with Winchester Cathedral, by singing choral evensong at the 900-year-old landmark.

The service is unchanged from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and St Andrew’s choir is privileged to be invited to Winchester on several occasions to sing the service.

Under the baton of Stephen Lacey, director of music at Farnham’s parish church, the choir sung settings by Herbert Sumsion with the Cantor being from the cathedral choir.

The canticles Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A major filled the East End of the cathedral, as did the anthem Abendlied by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger.

By chance a German family were in the congregation and were thrilled to hear the German evening prayer.

The choir rehearse each Friday evening at St Andrew’s in the centre of Farnham, from 7.30pm-9pm, and new members are welcome. Reading music is not a requirement, although it helps.

The choir consists of parishioners of all ages, and the director of music is particularly eager to boost youth participation in the choir.
