ALL things Welsh were celebrated in style at a fundraising dinner and entertainment on St David’s Day at the Georgian Hotel.
Guests were greeted with a welcome drink sponsored by Keats and traditional Welsh harp music played by local musician Kate Utting.
Many arrived sporting daffodil corsages and buttonholes, appropriately decorated daffodil and Welsh hats – ‘Het Gymreig’ – and there were even some Welsh tartans.
The tables were decorated with Welsh flags, fluffy dragons and daffodil arrangements sponsored by town borough councillor Carole King and created by the Haslemere Flower Club.
Before the dinner, a rousing rendition of the Welsh national anthem was sung, followed by a solo of David of the White Rock from Debra Williams, who also played the piano and flute. Nick McArdle read two poems, Miracle on St David’s Day by Welsh national poet Gillian Clarke and Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas.
Town mayor David Round led a game of Tops and Tails, where guests were invited to answer a range of questions relating to Wales.
The total raised was swelled by an auction of Welsh items by museum committee member Christopher Ashton-Jones and ended with everyone singing traditional Welsh songs.
After We’ll keep a welcome in the hillsides was sung, museum chairman Alan Perry thanked guests for their support and president Melanie Odell offered small gifts of appreciation to the committee.
Melanie said: “The evening raised almost £3,000 for museum funds and it was tremendous fun. I hope it will become an annual fixture.”
