A WHISTLE-stop tour brought together the mayor of Haslemere, members of one of the town’s organisations and its national chairman, in sunny Haslemere, last weekend,

Town mayor Sahran Abeysundara, welcomed Royal Society of St George (RSoStG) national chairman Joanna Cadman to the town on day two of her five-day solo charity walk from HMS Victory in Portsmouth to Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, in memory of a fellow society national council member, David Sowter, who died earlier this year.

Joanna’s walk had taken her over the South Downs the day before she journeyed through the Hampshire, Sussex, and Surrey countryside from Petersfield to the War Memorial in Haslemere.

She was also welcomed by Martin Coakley, Haslemere branch chairman, joint honorary presidents Albert and Shirley Hankers and fellow branch members.

Mr Abeysundara will be meeting St. George himself complete with dragon and maiden on Friday, April 21, when the Haslemere branch of the St George society holds its now traditional parade through the town for “Red Rose Day.”

The mayor also be one of the judges for the window dressing competition, won last year by Between the Lines, in Wet Street. After a brief photo call and lunch, Joanna set off for an overnight stop in Farncombe before arriving in Trafalgar Square for noon on Wednesday April 5.

The charities being supported by Joanna on her walk are Combat Stress and the London Air Ambulance.
