A POST-mortem examination has revealed that Petersfield man Danny Matthews died as a result of a stab wound to the neck. The 29-year-old's body was discovered in undergrowth near Chichester in September. An inquest into his death opened at Chichester Coroner's Court last week and has been adjourned until the conclusion of criminal proceedings. And during the short hearing, a coroner confirmed that the labourer, who lived in Chapel Street, died about a day after he went missing on June 3. He was last seen during a night out at the Market Inn in Petersfield Square in early June. But police found his body, which had been undiscovered for more than a month, in woodland at a hilltop known locally as Inholms Wood, north of Stoughton, on September 15. The body was later identified as Mr Matthews, whose full name is William Daniel Charlton- Matthews, following DNA testing. The grim discovery was followed earlier this month by a search for "property" relating to the investigation at Buriton pond. A team from Hampshire Constabulary's water search and recovery team cordoned off the adjoining car park as officers scoured the bottom of the tiny pond with metal detectors. Police say they didn't make any discoveries from the search, but investigations are continuing. Meanwhile, two new people have appeared at Winchester Crown Court in relation to the case, charged with perverting the course of justice. Keith Sims, 50, of Wingfield Street, Portsmouth, and 31-year-old Kirsty Harper, of Genthorne Meadow, Petersfield, have joined Graham Palfrey, 46, and Malcolm Carter, 42, both of Rival Lodge Farm, Harting faced with the charge. Carter has also been charged with the murder of Danny Matthews. A plea and case management hearing for the trial, held last Friday, was adjourned until December 22.
