HASLEMERE’S series of Heritage Open Days – when visitors are invited to experience local history, architecture and culture for free – gets under way today and continues until Sunday.
Events on offer in and around the town include:
* Haslemere Educational Museum celebrating its “Hidden Heritage” on Saturday, when visitors can see some of the objects not usually on display and also explore artefacts in its handling collection;
* Undershaw (pictured), the newly restored and extended former home of Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Hindhead opens to the public on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-1.30pm. Architects from Nye Saunders will offer guided tours. Undershaw is the new home of Stepping Stones School, which is moving from Tower Road.
* Historic Fernhurst Furnace hosts an action-packed open weekend from 10.30am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Highlights include Sealed Knot firing muskets and cannons, falconry displays, guided tours, target archery, blacksmithing, glass-blowing, spinning and bushcraft.
The site is one mile west of Fernhurst and will be signposted.
