RAIL disruption continued after Christmas following damage to the embankment in four separate places on the main line between Haslemere and Petersfield.

A tree across the line between Haslemere and Peterfield, on December 23, meant all trains stopped running from lunchtime. But services resumed briefly before again being disrupted by Monday night's storm.

Work to repair the damage and make the embankment safe for trains was estimated to take seven days to complete.

Some trains from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour ran only as far as Haslemere over the weekend, while others southbound services were diverted at Woking to connect with a shuttle service to Haslemere, Winchester, Fareham, Hilsea, Fratton and Portsmouth and Southsea.
