WAVERLEY Borough Council has assured concerned users of the Wey Centre, in Haslemere, they would not be evicted, after groups were notified last week it was all change from September.
The popular Streetnation Dance School, which holds classes at the centre three days a week, fired off an anxious email to Waverley, which owns the building but leases it out to Surrey County Council, when informed no bookings could be confirmed after August.
Leaders Nadeana Simpson-Hadden and Karen Musco protested: “We have been running a business out of the Wey Centre for eight years,
“In this time the Wey Centre has very much become part of Streetnation. Over the years thousands of children and young adults have been coming through these doors.
“In September, we have 150 children registered to come back to class after the summer holidays.
“This is a business and we rely on it for our living but above all we offer a service to the youth of Haslemere.
“We have had years of banging our heads against a wall trying to work out who is managing the centre and establish contact.
“I would be very grateful of your immediate assistance with this so we and the children’s parents can all put our minds at rest.”
Waverley’s property portfolio holder councillor Ged Hall assured users, which include A Place To Be youth group, their future at the centre was assured and the misinformation was a result of the borough council being currently in negotiations with the leaseholder, Surrey County Council, about taking back the building.
The formal handover is due in September and the borough council intends to renovate the facility.
Mr Hall, who represents Haslemere, said: “Waverley have always been clear we are committed to continuing the current youth groups’ use.
“However it would appear Surrey CC has given some of the local groups notice, due to an impending surrender of their interest in the premises, while still in possession of the lease.”
