REPRESENTATIVES from the charity Step by Step recently visited health and social care students at Farnham Sixth Form College to kick start their fundraising project.

As part of their course, students in the first year of their health and social care course are tasked with organising and carrying out fundraising activities as part of a team.

This can include a variety of events including cake sales, name the teddy, guess the number of sweets in the jar, fancy dress days and fashion shows.

The charity chosen for this year’s fundraising efforts is Step by Step, a homeless charity based in Aldershot, which helps young people facing homelessness and adversity.

It offers a unique step by step approach, providing accommodation, personal development opportunities, and specialist support services. Through this approach, Step by Step empowers young people to uncover and fulfil their aspirations.

Representatives from Step by Step, Blake, Emma Joyce and Gemma Fosbury gave an insightful presentation in to the work that Step by Step do and how they can change the lives of young people in the local area.

They encouraged the students to consider the various ways in which they could support the charity, from fundraising money and volunteering time, to donating food, clothes and vouchers.

Students Aoife Cotter, Rosie Bell and Tanatswa Chiwandamira, were particularly keen to raise money towards an activity or day out for the young people supported by the charity.

Aoife said: “I think it would be good to help them create some good memories and have something to look forward to.”

Jo Rotherforth, health and social care teacher at the college, inspired the students during the presentation by encouraging them to “make a worthwhile commitment and put something back in to your local community”.

She said: “I’m really proud of our students and their commitment to their course and work placements, so I have no doubt that they will show the same dedication in raising funds for Step by Step to continue the good work they do.”

Health and social care students have already made a good start to their fundraising efforts, hosting a bake sale in May, which raised £164. They will continue raising money for Step by Step over the next few months.
