TEN students from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham-based MA filmmaking course will be screening their short films at London’s British Film Institute (BFI) on August 16.

The work spans fantasy film, psychological thriller, through to social realism and documentary.

Lecturer Dominic Lees said: “These filmmakers have produced a highly impressive range of short films, with students stretching themselves artistically and technically.

“The students have scripted and directed films in a very wide range of genres and their work shows a real flair for cinema. 

“While each short film is the work of an individual film artist, we see very strong common themes, centring on stories about parenthood, growing up, and family relationships.”

Ayo Sanusi, 23, from Farnham, is one of the students whose work will be shown at the BFI.

His film, entitled ‘Tribe: The Tale of Han’, is a coming of age tale follows the protagonist Han as he struggles to grow up and forge his own identity.

When his best friend is in trouble with a rival tribe, Han is faced with a daunting mission to go against his tribe’s wishes and do what is right.

Ayo said: “I saw this film as an opportunity to make something different and unique, while pushing my skills and developing as a filmmaker.

“The MA filmmaking course not only equipped me with the writing, directing and editing skills to tell this story, it also encouraged me to keep pushing myself and to never give up trying to make things bigger and better.”

Dominic added: “The MA filmmaking course is a very challenging programme, taking students from a wide range of educational backgrounds who all have a passion for the moving image.

“The students arrive at UCA with a determination to use cinematic storytelling to express themselves; our course has the huge task of providing the artistic and technical training that will allow them to succeed.

“The film work that we are screening this summer shows their learning achievement over the past year, on a course that has equipped students with the knowledge and creative outputs that will serve as a launchpad for their careers in the film industries.”
